FAQs

NOTE: The FAQs are not meant to be detailed notes on how to use the features of the software. For best results, please refer to the Quick Reference Guide or the Video for getting started with the actual use of the software.

Installation of the TestGen Application

When I try to install TestGen on my Windows computer, the installation terminates. What do I do?
To install the TestGen application, you must log on as a user who has Administrator rights. Some network managers only grant Administrator privilege to persons in the Information Technology (IT) group, thereby restricting this access for other users (for example, for those who may be using computers that are shared in a lab situation). If you think this may be the case, contact your local IT person to assist you in the installation.

When I open my TestGen 7.x help, I cannot see the table of contents. What should I do?
If you are unable to see the Help file left hand navigation panel and you have Flash 8 or later, you will need to allow Webhelp in Flash 8 Global Security Settings. Please go to the Macromedia website settings manager page and follow these steps:

  • From the Edit Locations drop-down menu, select Add Location.
  • Type the following (or click the Browse button to add the following locations to the Flash Player Settings Manager):
  • c:\Program Files\TestGen\WebHelp\wf_master.htm
    and
  • c:\Program Files\TestGen\WebHelp\wf_master.swf
  • Click Always Allow.
  • Close your Internet Explorer browser and try the TestGen Help again. You should now be able to see the left hand navigation panel.

When I try to install TestGen, my anti-virus software detects a virus. What should I do?
Turn off your anti-virus software before installing TestGen. Be sure to turn it back on once you have completed the installation process.

I am already using a TestGen test bank on my computer and would like to use the Responding to Emergencies test bank. Are there any special instructions?
You would handle the download and installation of the Responding to Emergencies file in the same manner as your first installation. As the file contains both a TestGen application installer and the test bank itself, there is only one file you need to save/download to your system. The steps to follow are listed below:

  1. 1. Open the compressed zip file that contains the installer. For Windows the compressed file is ARCRTE_TGWin.zip. For Macintosh the file is ARCRTE_TGMac.zip
  2. 2. Save (download) the Installer found in the compressed file to your desktop. For Windows the installer is named nstall Win TestGen.exe. For Macintosh it is Install Mac TestGen.pkg.
  3. 3. Double click the Installer from step 2 that is now on your desktop.
  4. 4. Follow the prompts.

I have a previous installation of TestGen on my computer and just downloaded a new test bank. The notes for the new test bank say that the Question Type Headers are "turned off", as the generic directions may not be applicable, but my Headers are still turned on. Do I need to do anything?
The Question Type Headers are part of the preference settings of the TestGen application. The settings in your current installation would override any settings attached to the download of a new test bank. For instructions on how to "turn off" or edit your Question Type Headers, please see the "Quick Reference Guide".

Working with Tests

How do I display the Answer Key?
Go to Tools Menu>Preferences>Test Options dialog>Key Tab>Check box to display the Answer Key.

How can I get rid of the Answer Blanks?
Go to Tools Menu>Preferences>Test Options dialog>Questions Tab>Select button to not display Answer Blanks.

I want to display my TestGen test in Microsoft Word. How do I do that?
You can export the text to a Formatted Text File (RTF). This produces an RTF file that can be opened with MS Word. To do this:

  • Create or open the TestGen test you want to export. Format the test so that it displays the information in the way you want to export it. Select Export from the File menu. Choose to export the exam to a Formatted Text File (RTF). Name the file, including an .RTF extension. Choose where you want to save it.
  • Open this file in Microsoft Word or your favorite word processor. (Check the TestGen Help under "Exporting Tests to Text and RTF files" for more details about these steps and preserving fonts and formatting during the export.)

Can I exchange test files between a Mac and Windows computer?
Yes, you can exchange test (.tst) files between a Mac and Windows.

I'd like to have headers appear that indicate the type of question. How do I do this?
The generic Question Type Headers have been set to not display. There are instructions in the Quick Reference Guide on how to turn them on if you would like to utilize the feature.

Printing

I am having a problem printing my test from TestGen. What can I do?
Make sure you have added (installed) the printer to your computer and that you are using the latest manufacturer's print driver software for this printer. Consult your operating system documentation for instructions on this process. If you are able to print other documents, this may not be the cause of your problem.

I have the printer installed properly with the latest manufacturer's print driver, but I still cannot print my test. What else might be causing the problem?
Some printers do not allow the setting for a bottom margin to be less than a half inch. To check the current setting, from the File menu, click Page Setup. If the setting for margin set for Bottom is 0.5, try 0.75 inch.

While troubleshooting my printer, is there another way I can print tests?
Yes, there is a menu option to export a test document to PDF. Once you export, close TestGen and print the PDF test format.
